Music technostalgia
Playback: Reimagining Music Nostalgia in 3D
Creative Technologist + Experience Designer
FOCUS AREAS:
Concept Development | 3D Modelling | Blender | Web 3D Development | Three.js | JavaScript | HTML/CSS | Audio Playback | User Research | Design
OVERVIEW:
This project explores how interactive 3D environments can preserve the cultural memory of music technology. I designed and developed a browser-based prototype that reimagines analog playback devices, like the iPod Classic and vinyl player, as interactive 3D models. Users can rotate, explore, and play music from each device, blending sound, nostalgia, and digital preservation. Built with Blender and Three.js, the archive bridges the gap between material and digital heritage, showing how immersive design can transform memory into experience.
A research-driven interactive 3D archive developed as part of my Master’s dissertation, exploring technostalgia and digital preservation through immersive web design.
INSIGHT:
As music consumption shifted from physical to streaming, we lost the tangible rituals that shaped how we remember and engage with sound. I set out to explore whether technostalgia—the emotional connection to past technologies—could be recreated through 3D interactive design.
PROTOTYPE APPROACH
1. Research & Concept
-
Studied literature on technostalgia, digital preservation, and cultural memory
-
Identified devices (iPod, Vinyl) as cultural touchpoints for different listening eras
-
Defined core question: Can digital experiences evoke analog memory?
2. Design & Development
-
Modeled the iPod Classic and vinyl player in Blender
-
Integrated them into an interactive webpage using Three.js
-
Embedded curated music to recreate early-2000s listening experiences
-
Optimized models for performance and user interaction
-
Designed early-internet-inspired UI to evoke Y2K aesthetics
3. Testing & Evaluation
-
Conducted user testing with 5 participants
-
Measured usability, load times, and emotional resonance
-
100% of users reported feeling nostalgic and connected to the devices
PROTOTYPE DEMO
This project deepened my technical and creative practice in immersive media. It taught me that preservation isn’t just about keeping objects, it’s about designing experiences that help people feel connected to memory, sound, and culture.
The process solidified my focus on crafting emotionally intelligent digital experiences that merge storytelling, design, and technology.
